Choosing the Best Garden Bed for your Space

· · · Comments

In today’s dizzying retail landscape, there are sometimes so many options that picking the right product can be an insufferable experience. In some cases, we may even end up purchasing the wrong product for our needs! It’s the same situation when it comes to analyzing the thousands of options for raised and elevated garden beds. There are many different types of materials used, sizes, costs. . . . you name it. In this article, we will discuss how to choose the right garden bed for your home or store front.

The first step before purchasing is to assess your space. How much gardening space is available, and what are the dimensions? Our Everbloom beds can be customized to almost any shape, leaving you with many options depending on your capacity. For a large backyard, your options are almost limitless. However, it’s a different story when considering small spaces such as a porch or patio. Additionally, consider your physical capabilities (or that of the gardener). With our Everbloom elevated beds, you don’t ever need to kneel down to tend to your garden, saving you back and knee pain. If you have young helpers to assist in the fun, a raised bed may be more suitable as these beds sit on the soil with walls typically measuring between 7in and 14in. Measure out your space, and make some mental notes on the kind of look you are going for. This will help inform everything that follows.

Arguably, the most important decision is based on what you want to grow! The absolute minimum depth of a garden bed should be 4 inches. A fairly standard requirement of soil depth for plants with small roots. Our recommendation is to purchase a bed with at least 7 inches of planting depth, with up to 14 inches or more depending on how deep the roots spread on your plant choices. 14 inches will work fantastic for deeply rooted vegetables such as carrots and leeks. The general rule is that as your root depth gets deeper, so should your planting depth! What if you are planting a mix of deep and shallow rooted plants? Consider buying a tiered bed that gives you varying heights. From our product line, we suggest the Two Tiers Terraced Raised Garden Bed.

By answering these general questions and visualizing your space, you will be well on your way to choosing the perfect garden bed for your needs. The great thing about our Everbloom beds is that they are customizable and can work for everything from small decorative planters, to larger grows to feed your family (and maybe the neighbors!).
